When we crunched the numbers, our gross incomes from two careers would have been high, but the cost of living was also considerable, especially when daycare was figured into the calculation. Homemaking, like eating organic foods, seemed a luxury to be enjoyed only by those wives whose husbands garnered substantial earnings, enabling them to drive their children to school rather than put them on a bus, enroll them in endless enrichment activities, oversee their educational careers, and prepare them for entry into elite colleges in order to win a leg-up in a competitive workforce.

Not sure this is the best reason to go for a PhD :) It was definitely the source of many troubles, but also provided more opportunities for risk-taking – while struggling with becoming confident as a researcher I also knew I could afford being on the fringes as I didn’t plan a traditional academic career. Just to make sure you’ve seen it: Elmine also has a series of shorter videos where people from “our tribe” talk about education of their children. Elmine is doing something I should blog a long ago – working on the project about passionate professionals :

Sam Rose: “John Taylor Gatto explains the history of forced schooling , and the attitudes that extend into Universities, in The Underground History of American Education where he argues that education in the US is largely meant to create a caste system, and has largely succeeded in doing this. This 2 page sumarry from Digital Youth Research by Mizuko Ito et al also outlines the problems with coercive education, based on research about how kids actually go about learning. I’m upgrading Sam Rose’s contribution to our previous debate about unschoolin g, as it exemplifies the transformation of our school system through open and free modes.
SMC is created on a Drupal base but customized to reflect what Howard thought would be useful for educators. Howard’s exploration of teaching at this phase in his career and the importance of a constructivist, participatory approach. As part of CPSquare’s “ Connected Futures ” workshop exploring the use of web technologies in the service of communities of practice, we (John Smith and I!) asked Howard Rheingold to share a little bit about the Social Media Classroom (SMC) he developed as part of a MacArthur Foundation Award (A HASTAC award specifically).
