We’ve gone from a post-industrial economy organized around big, hierarchical corporations that had informal but powerful ties with big but sparsely policed Universities, to a world of small start-ups and fluid venture capital, huge collaborative efforts to pursue an “industrial biology” and vastly increased federal power to influence, control and even prohibit research. We’ve gone from an era of very small communities of biologists that regulated themselves and called it’s own moratoria (Asilomar) to federal laws that prohibit human cloning and restrict research on certain kinds of cells.

By now that is well understood, in part supported by the large body research and academic literature on how social networks in and across organizations drive results and performance. Now researchers from IBM Research and MIT have undertaken the largest study of its kind ever. BusinessWeek writes that Researchers at IBM and MIT have found that certain e-mail connections and patterns For years now I have been trying to get the message out to senior executives that effective social networks are critical to business performance . remember a Wired Magazine article in which the author talks about a manager at Southern California Edison who provided ambient orbs to about 100 customers so that they were better informed about electrical energy rates. Last week’s Time had an article on how President Obama is using the science of change to transform the country. Specifically, President Obama and his economic
But now, largely thanks to the burgeoning popularity of online social networks like Facebook , researchers are discovering what a powerful influence our connections — both online and off — really have over our lives. "Those of us who study social networks believe they matter — that things do spread along social networks," says Claude Fischer, a sociology professor at the University of California-Berkeley . Because social networks online are much more clearly defined than offline connections, they have been a boon to researchers. The first article , dating back to December 2007 but still of current interest, reports on a debate within venture capital circles, on the value of “Noncompete” agreements, enforced in Massachusetts but not in California, which restrict the mobility of employees, but also therefore the flow and sharing of information. Different research studies are cited showing how crucial this fact is for the higher competitivity of California. Thanks to Tomas Rawlings for pointing me to two interesting articles. 1.
