Maybe my disillusionment comes from the fact that my SXSWi experience this year started off with one of the most insulting conversational exchanges I’ve had in my entire life, with a “social media expert”, who later (and totally separately) blogged on the topic of the problems with interpersonal exchanges at the conference. My mate Geoff Brown blogs his experience running a music festival using improvisation, trust and the gift economy as an operating system: Over the weekend, myself and Marty Maher and a bunch of other volunteers stage the 3rd annual Aireys Inlet Open Mic Music Festival. Apart from being an absolutely outrageous success, it was loads of fun and we designed and staged it all without a Steering Committee (yaaay) … or a detailed strategic plan for that matter!

In the weeks before SXSW, I’d been reading Jonathan Zittrain’s book The Future of the The Internet about the slow strangling of the generative Web – it’s a great book, but a diet of misery supplemented with lots of blog posts about Continuous Partial Attention disorder and how our fragile biological brains are getting frazzled and can’t cope and stuff. take great joy in the brilliant network of people I work with and have met through Twitter and blogging, plus all of the friends they introduced, and the total randoms we crashed into along the way.
