If that principle is swept aside and sites like Blogger, YouTube and indeed every social network and any community bulletin board, are held responsible for vetting every single piece of content that is uploaded to them — every piece of text, every photo, every file, every video — then the Web as we know it will cease to exist, and many of the economic, social, political and technological benefits it brings could disappear." It is like prosecuting the post office for hate mail that is sent in the post," he told BBC News. "I I'm still reeling from the shock of hearing the news today that an Italian court has found three Google executives guilty (it acquitted the fourth), convicting them to suspended six-month sentences.

Now I like to think that I’m a doughty friend to fearless experiment, but I fear a laser-tripwire-tweeting-burglar-alarm-thingy is an innovation without which I might learn to live. IN OTHER NEWS ... The BBC is beginning the hack-back of its websites a year earlier than previously announced by Director General Mark Thompson. Political bloggers, so influential today, were still below the radar - and the internet barely figured as a tool in campaigners’ armoury. Welcome to eModeration's round-up of all that is intriguing, alarming or odd in the world of social media, compiled by Kate Williams (@emodkate).

There has been mixed coverage of this in traditional media - with many criticising CNN for its coverage , and the BBC seemingly blocked in Iran as a result of its reports on what is happening.
Blogs allow coverage in more detailed form from bloggers both inside and outside Iran and from all parts of the political spectrum

Note: my view was as a blogger first and only. I’m not a journalist who blogs, nor a blogger who has ever been paid for writing by a media organisation, nor journalist who is also an academic. Either the blogosphere is one big echo chamber, repeating each others articles – or worse, pinching them from the Press – with bloggers agreeing with each other and readers can never get a different viewpoint OR no one agrees with anyone online and it’s just a big chatfest of negativity, anonymous comments and flame wars. I spoke at Media140 Sydney – I want to highlight some of the “arguments” used against social media by the panels, also focus on Everybody co-creating The Human Narrative and the diminishing role of journalists who take news from one part of the community and deliver it to another part: It’s not YOUR content.

It stimulates me to ask more guest bloggers and do more interviews, as my topic is communities of practice for development and I have blind spots (like we all do). It makes me think it may be censored (like the BBC :)). But good news (or bad news for censors): I was able to read all my RSS feeds (even the BBC) and I could even add my blog to bloglines. Back to blogging! I

For local bloggers, it's a great way not to drown in the ocean of blogs and become more visible. So if you are a new Ghanaian blogger, and you write a good post, you may appear on the Reuters page! Compare that to the New York Times, with over 50% of users in the US, or BBC, with over 30% in the UK, and it’s clear that we’ve got something of an unusual audience pattern. The fact that only a minority of visitors are from the north (though Ethan doesn't talk about Europe), I've been a fan of Global Voices , since I discovered it. Via Ethan Zuckerman's blogpost I learned

Friendster gained traction among three groups of early adopters who shaped the site—bloggers, attendees of the Burning Man arts festival, and gay men (boyd, 2004)—and grew to 300,000 users through word of mouth before traditional press coverage began in May 2003 (OShea, 2003). Then, in July 2005, News Corporation purchased MySpace for $580 million (BBC, 2005), attracting massive media attention. JCMC Home Submit Issues Author Index Editors About JCMC boyd, d. m., &
