synchronization of read/unread marks, de-duping of redundant feed items, etc). IT organizations may be concerned about network utilization and their inability to manage bandwidth concerns
The article below is interesting in that it does call out a dark truth - enterprise adoption of feed syndication tools has been lacking. However, However, the article disappoints because it gives too much credit to feed readers as the reason.

While Americans would complain about the technology, the time, and anything, my African colleagues would overcome horrid bandwidth and intermittent electricity to participate. I’m consciously including visual methods and practices, particularly in synchronous online work, made possible by new visual tools such as shared mind mapping, and better online whiteboards.
This afternoon I’m spending a half hour on a Skype video conversation to share a bit of how I use social media. I

Teamspeak seems to work better at low bandwidth than Skype, although the quality of the sound can be reduced. The next interview took place at July 3, 2006 with Dorine Ruter from ETC. Meeting at a distance “Over a year ago the programme committee of RUAF (Resource Centres for Urban Agriculture and Food Security - www.ruaf.org) came to me with the question whether I knew a tool that would make it possible to conduct a meeting over the internet. Thirdly some participants preferred a tool that supported synchronous conversation with sound. The tool: Teamspeak Teamspeak is a software application for online meetings.

An audio recorder supports the asynchronous side and the mobile phones (either as audio devices or for text messages) support the synchronous.
I used the interview the very next day in a “huddle session” about technologies and local development, gathering a small group around my laptop to look at the video, without editing or uploading it anywhere (there wasn’t really enough reliable bandwidth to upload a video file at the conference). Last week at the KM4Dev conference in Brussels , I struck up a conversation with Joseph Sikeku, who talked about community leadership and technology stewardship in a radically different setting: a radio station in Tanzania.

Optional synchronous calls or chats may be offered if there is an interest.
Some tools may not be accessible for those with low bandwidths. Do you work for an international development NGO? Then sign up now for the next Social Media Workshop offered by the ICT-KM Program of the CGIAR. Here are the details:

How can we make use of social media under low-bandwidth constraints?
Identify possibles usages of social media through small group synchronous and full group asynchronous conversation, exploring opportunities and constraints related to your work.
Some tools may not be accessible for those with low bandwidths. It seems like we just finished the last one, but here it comes again… the next Social Media for International Development Sector Workshop from the ICT-KM Program of the CGIAR . I’m really looking forward to facilitating it with Simone and Pete!

Feed Syndication Platforms are a classic example of middleware - they aggregate feeds from many other sources, provide centralized management, enable control of network bandwidth, provide centralized policy control, help with de-duping feed items, help with synchronizing read/un-read marks across multiple feed readers a person might be using (mobile, browser, email etc).
A lot of great comments over at the main article: R.I.P Enterprise RSS .

Is a synchronous or asynchronous tool needed? Does it have to be accessible at low bandwidth? Problems like bugs or other technical problems like low bandwidth or spam are always obvious obstacles. Of course there are bandwidth and other technical issues, but all partners within the initiatives of this research are very positive. What do the different stories tell us? We tried to cover the field of e-collaboration among Dutch NGOs as broadly as possible, to give an impression of the many different ways Dutch NGOs use e-collaboration in their work.

The speed that your internet is served to you is based on the type of internet connection you have and the amount of bandwidth being used on the node you are on.
