In May I am co-hosting a conference in Australia with Geoff Brown , Viv McWaters , Anne Pattillo and Johnnie Moore on evaluating behaviour change in sustainability initiatives. Toyota have chosen 5 or 6 agencies and have asked them to spend $15,000 each on a “social media marketing campaign”. And while traditional media pitches means war to get content into banner ads, on TV and radio, when it comes to using the same tactics in online communities, there’s damage done. If you want a different kind of engagement than social media stunts, please retweet or comment or link or something? Think “stunt” and you have a better idea of what they are talking about.. What’s more, social networking use is ubiquitous across the web, composing almost 90% of users that populated Australia’s top internet properties for the month.

If you hunt through this blog, you’ll notice that I’ve been tracking Facebook users in Australia since May 2007 (around 200,000 members I think) to today and 1/3 of Australian population.

lot of companies, governments, brands, famous people think that creating some content (in isolation) shoving it up on a social media channel and never looking at it again (unless there is a negative comment, cos y’know, we have to protect our ‘image’) is engagement . She has 150,000 subscribers to her channel (slightly more than a morning TV show in Australia), she ranks #37 in Australia. This video has nearly 8,000 comments.
