Despite the physical divide, we spent two hours in the same room, with Scott Greenburg presenting on "Digital Directorship," me chiming in and facilitating, fifteen people on their end, two on ours, the directors speaking up as we went along, make observations, asking questions, exchanging insights. (Scott Gene Papula, Senior Engineering Manager for Cisco in North America , was the host on my end; Dale Walker, Systems Engineer in the Phoenix Cisco office, was the host on the other end. The Best from the Communities and Networks Connection Community

It was in “helping” “save” the community after Howard lost funding that I had my first big online facilitation failure. It was my urgency to figure this out that set me on my professional path as a practitioner and learner about online facilitation. This was where I had the amazing opportunity to co-facilitate an online workshop with Mihaela Moussou (now Michele Paradise). Then Sunday morning, the “supreme artist of  North America” (did ya see, I wrote it, Jim!) “Reverend” Jim Groom lit up the room with fabulous, concreted examples of open learning at Mary Washington University, replete with volunteer choir and “Amen’s” from the crowd. (Well, As promised earlier , here is my reflection of the keynote I did at the Instructional Technology Council’s annual gathering on February 22nd.

I have had an interesting few days working with Aboriginal leadership from around North America. One of the things that folks in the rest of indigenous North America don’t realize about the cultures of the west coast is how radically different they are from the cultures of the plains, desert and forests of the rest of North America. was faced with these two different cultural contexts in the last two weeks as I went about my work facilitating groups. In Michigan last week, I helped convene 24 folks interested in what indigenous leadership means, and today I am here in Port McNeil BC, hosting a community to community forum between First Nations and local governments.

As a facilitator, try to be online 10 minutes earlier and have all skype addresses in advance, so that you can easily add everyone to the chatspace. The facilitator could try the following:”mute all participated and unmute them one by one, to see where some noise was coming from. Using supporting tools. larger group requires much more structure and facilitation. When you don’t know how to ride a bike, walking is always faster! An online conference call seems like a simple, cheap and accessible way for bringing a distributed group together. As we use our e-collaboration community

quot;[30] Several other points may be necessary to consider before embarking on a collaborative venture: What are the structural relationships between the parties and the possible power issues inherent in the collaborative arrangement? Is there a clear understanding among all the parties of the respective goals of the other participants? What form of leadership is required to facilitate the process? Does the project have some form of integrating structure, such as a cross-section of steering committees, to facilitate and coordinate decision-making
Future directions for Dgroups include Improving facilitation of Dgroups, engaging Dgroups administrators and users and improving the web platform and interface. Through a blogpost by Sarah Cummings I had the chance to read a report on the use and characterization of Dgroups in Latin America. Last week we had several discussions on how to get lively discussions going on online fora. It made me think again about the success of Dgroups "the starting point for fostering groups and communities in international development " and how hard it is to pinpoint the critical success factors
