Well, it put in your newsfeed when you bought something at eBay or Amazon or whatever. Superb if you did a great deal on a Louis Vuitton classic handbag on eBay, less good if you are buying “Herpes and You” on Amazon or porn at Blockbuster Video. About a month ago, we released a new feature called Beacon to try to help people share information with their friends about things they do on the web. I always thought Beacon would work, it was just a bit too soon for some of the older bloggers, who kicked up a stink that Beacon couldn’t be turned off and the default option was “on”.

Moving to a linked web or semantic web without a powerful knowledge platform at the base is building a castle made of sand - close to the water line.
These tools need to be democratized to bring the beginning of distributed knowledge creation into labs, with the efficiencies we know from eBay and Amazon (of course, these tools should perhaps be restricted to authenticated research scientists, so that we don’t get garage biologists accidentally creating a super-virus).
I propose that the point of this isn’t to replicate “open source” as we know it in software.

After all, Amazon made $490 million their first quarter from having members find, share, discover, recommend books through social media. The power of the peer to peer marketplace, where the online community member is the reseller is not to be ignored, Apple & Amazon & eBay know that.

On one hand, a wiki is just a web site thats easy for anyone to edit - see Mahalo for example, another Mediawiki-based community. These features are now available for Mediawiki-based sites anywhere on the web, including for commercial use.
