A lot of stories about innovation in Africa were floating around my head from the special report on telecoms in emerging markets in the September 24th 2009 issue of The Economist: Mobile marvels ). An audio recorder supports the asynchronous side and the mobile phones (either as audio devices or for text messages) support the synchronous.

Then it was Azerbaijan, Georgia (the country), Armenia, Kenya, South Africa, Indonesia, Columbia, Ghana, Ethiopia, and a multitude of international NGOs based in Europe and North America who gave me the opportunity to apply online interaction and collaboration practices in the field of international development.
I’m consciously including visual methods and practices, particularly in synchronous online work, made possible by new visual tools such as shared mind mapping, and better online whiteboards.
This afternoon I’m spending a half hour on a Skype video conversation to share a bit of how I use social media.

Ah, now we can sit down with a deep dive into an excellent chapter about how academics in South Africa adopt new technologies and think about teaching, right? synchronous read is a wonderful idea but to actually make it happen takes a huge amount of effort. CPsquare is having a book club event, where everyone is invited to read a book about communities of practice together. Sounds simple enough, right?

Identify possibles usages of social media through small group synchronous and full group asynchronous conversation, exploring opportunities and constraints related to your work.
These are scheduled for the afternoons for those in Europe and Africa, mornings for North and South American, and evenings for Asia. It seems like we just finished the last one, but here it comes again… the next Social Media for International Development Sector Workshop from the ICT-KM Program of the CGIAR .
