The Australian Minister for Censorship has today confirmed what I’ve been reporting for nearly two years: online adult games including Second Life will be banned in Australia.
Incidentally, with regards to online games, some are boxed (closed systems such as Grand Theft Auto), some are box and server (multiplayer such as World of Warcraft) and some are downloadable clients or simply web based clients to a hosted server (Second Life, Habbo). This week I came across an advertisement that goes one step further - it suggests that a person should have an email address that their Second Life avatar can take with them into Real Life. LindenPost.com is now offering email accounts that are tailored to people’s double identities in the “real” world and Second Life.
I have several email addresses, and I use them each for different purposes. I I never receive personal emails on my work account.

We look at Freemium revenue in social networks and online communities including asking that: if freemium is the business model of giving it all (or most) of the services away for free , how can you then charge for it? And what is free stuff anyway – marketing?

Unfortunately, as with social networks, advertising has not kept pace with usage," Williamson says. "Not Not surprisingly, the hype and fizzling out of Second Life, combined with the tough economy, have made some marketers skittish for virtual worlds in general." Advertising adds value to a product by changing our perception, rather than the product itself. Rory Sutherland makes the daring assertion that a change in perceived value can be just as satisfying as what we consider “real” value — and his conclusion has interesting consequences for how we look at life.
“what we in create in advertising is intangible value… a very, very, very fine substitute for using up labour or limited resources… intangible value to replace actual or material value…” AND all value is perceived value .
Episode 1 of Social Media Business: What is “the experience economy” – is it the next step on from agrarian, commodity, service…?
