When we designed Twitter, we took a different approach—we didn’t require a relationship model like that of a social network. Keeping things open meant you could browse our site to read tweets from friends, celebrities, companies, media outlets, fictional characters, and more. Or something more?

Just as we thought we were entering a web of data, of synchronised, personalised content shooting freely around through APIs, along comes the self-contained application; and just as we thought we were moving from mass media to social media, making and treading our own path, along comes Interview as a linear, editorially driven page-by-page experience on my iPad (with a couple of token sharing features chucked in).
The budget that went on AOTT would not long ago have gone into double page spreads in Vogue or Harpers’ Bazaar (and Burberry, by the way, spent nothing on paid

With the publication this month of the Internet Advertising Bureau’s ‘ Social Media Ad Metrics Definitions’ , it seemed a good moment for me to write about the thorny subject, and have a look at some of the controversy around the measurement of ROI in social media. L et’s face it, the Obama Presidential campaign was one of the most successful social media marketing efforts in the history of the internet. can count on my fingers the number of major US companies that understand new media the way the Obama campaign did.

This post is fourth in a series of my Social Media Principles. The base post is 10 Social Media Principles . 4. People at the companies who are actually responsible for success are disempowered from making decisions or creating growth. Social Media has shown us that the decentralization of power and information have led to very rapid advances in productivity and a very different set of assumptions about personal empowerment. Decentralization is freedom – Decentralized power structures spur creativity, growth, and innovation. Note: Writing a short blog post on this is like writing a short blog post on why it’s hard to cure addiction.

We look at Freemium revenue in social networks and online communities including asking that: if freemium is the business model of giving it all (or most) of the services away for free , how can you then charge for it? In this episode of Social Media Business podcast, the concept of freemium is introduced – what it is, how Flickr, LinkedIn, SecondLife are making millions of dollars from giving stuff away for free. And what is free stuff anyway – marketing? advertising?

We played the Dutch social media game in 3 groups of 10 people. The game was inspired by the social media game developed by Beth Kanter and David Wilcox. examples that I learned about (or already knew) in the context of 'draagvlakversterking', with a few exceptions Dutch-based: Doenersnet ( a ning platform started by OXFAM NOVIB) 1procentclub ( a social network for people who want to devote 1% of their time) Helpalot (a social network for charities) JongOS ( a ning platform Last Thursday I had a great day with communication specialists (and a few technologists) of the Dutch development sector at the Context Masterclass about 'web2.0

Last year, Forum One recognized that one of the key issues community and social media professionals face is that we (as an industry) are suffering from a lack of solid benchmarks, including compensation of online community and social media professionals. In July of 2008, as part of our ongoing research efforts with the Online Community Research Network , we conducted the first comprehensive study and gained valuable insight about online community and social media professional's compensation, team structure, and current job satisfaction.
