One of the frequent criticisms of the Academy Awards is that its aging membership does not reflect popular demographic trends . 2008’s show during the TV writers strike, at just over 32 million viewers, was the least viewed ever. I’m not watching it – sorry Channel Nine – but I am flicking between the streaming webpage, tweets and other bits an bobs of sites.

I’ve pitched similar ideas about Amplified Individuals into discussion about the ways that the RSA might develop its membership: how about Amplified Fellows ? first came across the idea of Amplification back in 2008, at an event at NESTA . Some social media discussions may be getting a bit tired and inward looking, as I wrote here . However, events and meetings over the past couple of weeks have given me a fresh boost of energy and optimism.

The challenge is to get some connection and integration - because the vertical organisations will have membership fees and closed spaces, while the horizontal ones will be more open. Another thing is that bottom-up creation may result in more communities that have lower membership, but where everyone is a major contributor (these are thriving communities as you usually trust a smaller circle of people, and you are all on the same wavelength and have time for each other).
