When choosing a map, which do you prefer — pretty or useful ? The first map, by TweetWheel , is pretty, has nice colors, a simple and elegant interface, and a nice circular layout. But what does it really tell me? The second map, by InFlow , is not as sexy, uses less color, and produces some complex emergent patterns. Yet, this second map gives me more information -- it shows me emergent patterns in the data [both graphs use the same following data]. In an ideal world I would take pretty useful , but forced to choose between the two I'll take useful .

Following last month's release of the iPhone 3G , along with the launch of the App Store , and what Brian Fling called the " first true Mobile 2.0 ," everyone around here is talking about the emergence of the mobile device as a critical facet of web strategy. My colleague Anders Rosenquist, who is seriously deep on mobile, presented a first take on the company point of view on mobile strategy at a recent meeting; another colleague, Justin Marshall , is knee-deep in an iPhone app; and in general things are just all abuzz about mobile.
