Hillary Wainwright is one of the finest people I have met over the last few years, so I’m happy to share this profile, written by my friend David Bollier :
“If you want to learn the nitty-gritty about social transformation in our times — What works and what doesn’t? In a lengthy chapter her 2004 book Reclaim the State: Experiments in Popular Democracy (updated and re-issued in paperback this month), Wainwright describes in great detail how Brazil’s Workers’ Party (PT), under the leadership of the city’s mayor, Olivio Dutra, opened up the budgetary process to all citizens.

Facebook is unquestionably the world’s top social hub for content – nearly 50% of all the content shared via Gigya – links, photos, videos and more – are broadcast to the world via Facebook, versus 29% which get a Tweet. They further maintain that another Xerox-held patent dating back to 2004 is currently being infringed by Google’s Adsense and Adwords software, amongst others. Welcome to eModeration's round-up of all that is intriguing, alarming or odd in the world of social media, compiled by Kate Williams. This afternoon I’m spending a half hour on a Skype video conversation to share a bit of how I use social media. Global Networks & Knowledge Sharing
As I dove deeper into knowledge management and knowledge sharing in international development, social software was growing, changing and evolving. I figured it would be good to exercise my memory a bit and unearth some of the key stories that led me to to my social media use today, and perhaps surface some of my patterns.

It was published in the Knowledgeboard on the 24th of September 2004 , and it started a very nice conversation (there, and in the old KB forums). It recent development in an online community has shone the spotlight again on a matter that I’ve repeatedly found to be very important for CoPs in particular and for knowledge building and sharing in general. In other words, how beneficial is the impact of human personal relationships, That was the title. The subtitle was “The challenge of sustainable socialisation”.

In working with knowledge sharing and learning initiatives within international non governmental organizations (NGOs), the author has observed a pattern where talented internal practitioners have struggled to spread innovations, engender learning required for successful work, and in general, been stopped from excelling.
The connection with an external practitioner then allows a sharing of ideas, and the beginning of a peer coaching or support relationship. OK, I need your help. I

Engineers without Fears Sunday, October 14, 2007 Collaboration vs sharing James Robertson talks about collaboration tools as anti-knowledge sharing . big part of the role of KM (or whatever you want to call it) is the development of shared contexts between groups within an organisation because without that shared context you cant transfer anything. If I understand JR correctly, his point is that collaboration tools are great for specific teams. However each team works in its own context and this leads to the creation of silos which prevents

Essentially, as we increase group sizes beyond 80, to 150, 200, or even 350-500, we typically do so by breaking larger groups down into smaller ones, and continually reducing community sizes down to the point where they can be understood and managed by people -- and so efficiency reasserts itself. Since this post was originally posted, I have added a number of other posts about the Dunbar Number and group size issues: 2005-02: Dunbar Triage: Too Many Connections 2005-03: Dunbar, Altruistic Punishment, and Meta-Moderation 2005-07: Cheers: Belongingness and Para-Social Relationships

I thought it would be useful to throw out a couple of definitions so that we all had a shared vocabulary when talking about the different types of Web applications that incorporate some form of social networking. This flexibilty is enabled by the fact that the Social OS is a platform that enables one to build various social graph applications on top of it. By the way, on revisiting my schedule I do believe I should be able to attend the Data Sharing Summit on Friday next week.
