I’m modestly pleased at the recent succession of posts which do not refer to Big Society. But I guess my thinking just went underground for a bit. This is the first of two or three posts in which, belatedly, I’ll start to offer a critique from the community development perspective. What will happen? What should we do? | | | | | | | | NEIGHBOURHOODS NOVEMBER 25, 2010 Caution: is your community legal? This is fun. According to the LGiU , ‘The good folks at Eland House have a problem on their hands. The official line is that the Localism Bill has been delayed by “parliamentary congestion”. There’s also speculation, however, that the Bill is being delayed because some of its content is creating a headache for the civil servants. | NEIGHBOURHOODS MARCH 5, 2012 'I want to recreate that sense of community' I’m not doing this to be mischievous, honestly. read the following paragraph, the sort of statement that reaches me about once a week on average: “I grew up in [N], in a neighborhood where my family knew everyone on the block and we all looked out for each other. wanted to recreate that sense of community.”. Yes maybe I'm being a little unfair. | | NEIGHBOURHOODS AUGUST 8, 2011 Maybe capitalism didn't quite work Our politicians are doing a lot of 'deploring' and 'condemning' at the moment, there being not much else they can say really. Londoners are letting the Olympic terrorists know they needn't bother. I'm watching the #londonriots stream going at about 80 tweets/minute and rising. Why is that? What makes people so care-less? | | | | | | | | | -
NEIGHBOURHOODS | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2009 No, the tech doesn't weaken local social ties The results of Keith Hampton' s latest study, on Social isolation and new technology , have just been released by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. The study surveyed a nationally representative sample of 2,512 adults in summer 2008. It finds that Americans are not as isolated as has previously been reported. We don’t know. Summary. MORE >> -
NEIGHBOURHOODS | THURSDAY, JUNE 23, 2011 The neutering of community development? It’s fair to say that a vacuum was created by the recent abrupt ending of government funding to the likes of Community Development Foundation, Community Development Exchange, and Urban Forum. From slightly to one side (the usual angle) it appears as if the Big Lottery Fund’s People Powered Change programme is swelling within that vacuum. So what? MORE >> -
NEIGHBOURHOODS | FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 2012 Local democratic participation and parking I sometimes wonder whether, in late medieval cities, there were disputes about where people left their carts. Car parking is a major issue in contemporary neighbourhoods, and inconsiderate parking infuriates people. Maybe some kinds of personality just get sparked by the very idea of public space, and always have done. There was no disruption. MORE >> -
NEIGHBOURHOODS | SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2010 The future of regeneration and the politics of power Over on Living with rats , Julian Dobson has started and reflected some convened-group thinking about the future of regeneration ( here and here ). The debate will be featured in New Start magazine in due course. think the focus on the relation between economic development and environmental sustainability is spot on. ' (Brent 2009, p245). NEIGHBOURHOODS | FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2011 Occupying the neighbourhood: 'everybody knows who you are' Yesterday I was working with my colleague Hugh Flouch with some residents on an estate in Wolverhampton. They're all tenants of Wolverhampton Homes, and like many local people have been there for a long time. I'm not intending to offer an analysis of the programme here - check Dave Hill's article and links for that. MORE >>
