This month restarts the Community Capers project to case study some of the brilliant examples of communities of practice that exist across the globe. The first of these spotlighted communities will be Jokaydia a CoP that has its home base in Second Life but impacts on the professional lives of its members well beyond that environment. It is en educational community that cuts across geographic, systemic and sectoral boundaries

It’s taken a long time but since 1992 MirandaNet members have been learning how to communicate on line. Now an e-mature community our discussions are becoming more and more sophisticated. We now have examples of interchange where members are creating new knowledge online. They then use these community texts

Just aggregating the definitions of community in the literature over the last sixty years only serves to confound rather than clarify an understanding of what community comprises. The sociologist Hillery (1955) sought to determine the common definitional components of community. His research determined that four common components occurred in 69 of the 94 definitions of community; people , common ties , social interaction

This research outlines my conceptual framework built out from the four definitional components to include core conditions and key attributes. The framework was developed through open and axial coding of rich text data collected from multiple sources (interviews, observations, documents, web site audits, artifacts and published and promotional materials). The convener is the one person most likely to have high levels of continuity and contact with members

Tim recently pointed me in the direction of a Facebook group called Secret London . It currently has 188k members. This isn’t entirely surprising until you realise that it was only created 2 weeks ago. The grou is for “… Londoners to inspire Londoners by sharing the secrets of the city”.

Today is Safer Internet Day 2010. Organised each year by Insafe , and coordinated in the UK by CEOP , Safer Internet Day aims to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world. In 2009, Safer Internet Day was celebrated through 500 events in 50 countries all over the world.

Managing staff who participate in social networks. This list also includes policies called; Staff blogging policies, enterprise social network guidelines, Employee Blogging Policies, Staff engagement in online communities, and so on. I’ve done a few press (radio, print) interviews this week re: Telstra so I thought I should have another look at how Enterprise, Government, Corporates, Not for Profits  are handling the fact that their staff are members of social networks too.
