(With apologies to the used-to-be and now-is-again artist Prince)
I I was talking to a potential client last week, and was getting pushed back because their current social media efforts aren't doing much for them. In fact, they are pretty negative.

I'm one of those people who believe that things are almost always simpler than we think. Too often we make things less clear as we try and describe things - we make them hard to understand with a fog of language that hides a lack of conceptual rigor and clarity. We - all - get caught in this as we try and engage the language rather than the underlying concepts.

We've all got TSA horror stories (my favorite is the time at MCO that I was threatened with arrest for moving some of the plastic tubs from one line - where there were lots - to our line - where there were none).
Here's Here's a horror story with a small social media angle...some some screeners in Philadelphia forced a disabled 4 year old's parents to remove his leg braces

What What I explained is that "social media in the enterprise is a three-axis problem."

By that I mean that we assume that most people do what we do and follow our normal cycles...that's that's uniquely dangerous for consultants and trebly dangerous for new media consultants.
I I was just at the eye doctor, and commented that I'm probably in front of a monitor 9 to 10 hours a day.

Because real community ROI can be hard to measure (so we use proxies for it like cost-per-impression comparisons with advertising, or offsets for physical event costs), we often tend to measure the 'health' of our communities by the level of activity. New members, posts-per-member, churn (new members - members who are inactive or quit) are fairly typical metrics that I've used in looking at communities.

I was recently asked how social media is relevant to environmental educators. For a quick version of why its important, click the you tube video.

We can separate the following aspects of interacting with the hybrid ecosystem:
a) Defining ontodimensions and taking personal perspectives evokes meaningful places in ontospace and contributes to the formation of the community niche;
b) Social surveillance as a participatory monitoring, empowering and subjectivity building practice in hybrid ecosystem allows dynamic awareness of the state of the ontospace;

I'm just picking up here from a train of thought by Rich Baker over at his new site Conversational UK -- which he in turn picked up from the arch-tweeter @darren_bbc. His point was about how, as your numbers within Twitter grow, it's becoming less of a conversation and more of a broadcast shout. Rich says in his post Feed Me, Twitter! "Over recent weeks, I have been investing more time in unfollowing people I don’t have

Managing staff who participate in social networks.
This list also includes policies called; Staff blogging policies, enterprise social network guidelines, Employee Blogging Policies, Staff engagement in online communities, and so on. I’ve done a few press (radio, print) interviews this week re: Telstra so I thought I should have another look at how Enterprise, Government, Corporates, Not for Profits are handling the fact that their staff are members of social networks too.
